Jaida's Beanie - Crochet Pattern

 


A great hat for the whole family! Made with an extra wide brim so you can either fold over a cuff for a great fitting beanie or leave it down for a more “slouchy hat” effect. YOU choose the look you want. 

Pattern for adult sizes is at the beginning of the article, children’s sizes are below.

Red Heart Super Saver (7 oz / 198 g - 364 yds / 333 m)

1 each - Aran (A), Coral (B), Soft Navy (C)


Materials / Tools

H-8 / 5.0mm Hook

I-9 / 5.5mm Hook

Pom Pom

Gauge

Ribbing for brim with H-8 / 5.0mm hook - 7 st & 5 rows = 2 inches

Body of hat in pattern stitch with I-9 / 5.5mm hook - 12 st & 9 rows = 4 inches


Special Stitches

hdc2tog  (half double crochet 2 together) - yo, insert hook into the next st, pull up a loop, 3 loops on hook, yo, insert hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, yo and pull through all 5 loops on the hook.


Dc2tog (double crochet 2 together) - yo, insert hook into the next st, pull up a loop, 3 loops on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo insert in next st, pull up a loop, 4 loops on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops, 3 loops on hook, yo pull through last 3 loops.


Notes

Unless otherwise noted, beginning chains do not count as a stitch.

Working the Body of the hat, unless otherwise noted, stitch placement for the beginning of the round is not critical.




Instructions – Adult Sizes

Sizes

Teen / Sm. Adult 19 in (48 cm)

Med. Adult21 in (53.5 cm)

Lg. Adult 22.5 in (58.5 cm)


Brim


With H-8 / 5.0mm Hook and color A, ch 16

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 2, turn (15 sts)

Row 2: BLO, dc in each st across, ch 1, turn

Row 3: BLO, sc in each st across


Repeat rows 2 and 3 until desired length ending with a row 2 (Teen / Sm. Adult - 48 rows - 19 in (48 cm); Med. Adult - 52 rows - 21 in (53.5 cm); Lg. Adult – 56 rows - 22.5 in (57 cm)) Being careful not to twist, sew (or sl st) the last row and first row together to form the brim. Make sure the seam for the brim is on the inside (WS) before starting the main body of the hat.


Body


With I-9 / 5.5mm Hook and color A

Round 1: (RS) work 1 hdc in the ends of the sc rows and 2 hdc in the ends of the dc rows all the way around the brim, finish off A (72 – 78 – 84 sts)

Round 2: (RS) Join B and ch 1 [sc, hdc, dc] in same st, skip next 2 st *[sc, hdc, dc] in next st skip 2 st repeat from * around, sl st in first st, ch 1, turn

Round 3: (WS) [sc, hdc, dc] in same sc as join, skip next 2 st *[sc, hdc, dc] in next sc skip 2 st repeat from * around, sl st in first sc, finish off B, turn

Round 4: (RS) Join A, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc each st around, sl st in first hdc, finish off A

Round 5: (RS) Join C, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in each st around, sl st in top of ch 3, finish off C

Round 6: (RS) Join A, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc each st around, sl st in first hdc, finish off A

Rounds 7 – 11: Repeat rounds 2 – 6 once

Rounds 12 – 13: Repeat rounds 2 – 3 once more


Decreases


Round 1: Join A, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in next 3 st, hdc 2 tog, *hdc in next 4 st, hdc 2 tog, repeat from * around, sl st in first hdc, finish off A

Round 2: Join C, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in next 2 st, dc 2 tog, *dc in next 3 st, dc 2 tog, repeat from * around, sl st in top of ch 3, finish off C  

Round 3: Join A, ch 1, hdc 2 tog around, do not finish off, cut the yarn leaving a tail approximately 10 inches in length, using a yarn needle weave the tail through the last row of stitches and cinch shut. Tie to secure and then use the rest of the tail to sew on the pom pom. 


Finishing

Weave in all the ends.

Sizes


Toddler 14 in (35.5 cm)

Sm Child 15.5 in (39 cm)

Med Child 17 in (43 cm)

Lg Child / Teen 18 in (46 cm)


Brim


With H-8 / 5.0mm Hook and color A, ch 11

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 2, turn (10 sts)

Row 2: BLO, dc in each st across, ch 1, turn

Row 3: BLO, sc in each st across


Repeat rows 2 and 3 until desired size ending with a row 2 (Toddler – 36 rows - 14 in (35.5 cm): Sm. Child – 38 rows - 15.5 in (39 cm); Med. Child - 42 rows - 17 in (43 cm); Lg Child / Teen – 46 rows - 18 in (46 cm)) Being careful not to twist, sew (or sl st) the last row and first row together to form the brim. Make sure the seam for the brim is on the inside (WS) before starting the main body of the hat.



Body


With I-9 / 5.5mm Hook and color A

Round 1: work 1 hdc in the ends of the sc rows and 2 hdc in the ends of the dc rows all the way around the brim, finish off A (54 – 57 – 63 – 69 sts)

Round 2: Join B and ch 1 [sc, hdc, dc] in same st, skip next 2 st *[sc, hdc, dc] in next st skip 2 st repeat from * around, sl st in first st, ch 1, turn

Round 3: [sc, hdc, dc] in same sc as join, skip next 2 st *[sc, hdc, dc] in next sc skip 2 st repeat from * around, sl st in first sc, finish off B, turn

Round 4: Join A, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc each st around, sl st in first hdc, finish off A

Round 5: Join C, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc in each st around, sl st in top of ch 3, finish off C

Round 6: Join A, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc each st around, sl st in first hdc, finish off A

Repeat rounds 2 – 3

Toddler Size

Round 3: Join A, ch 1, hdc2tog around, do not finish off, cut the yarn leaving a tail approximately 10 inches in length, using a yarn needle weave the tail through the last row of stitches and cinch shut. Tie to secure and then use the rest of the tail to sew on the pom pom.


Finishing

Weave in all the ends.
